Der Arzt und Funkamateur Don Miller ist eine in jeder Hinsicht außergewöhnliche Persönlichkeit. Als CW-Operator unübertroffen - er gab mit der linken Hand und führte zugleich mit der rechten das Logbuch -; als DXpeditionär ein weltreisender Pionier und hervorragender Organisator; in einer durchaus auch unsachlich geführten Kampagne als Schwindler entlarvt. Dem jähen Verlust an Ansehen folgte ein persönlicher Absturz, der Don für viele Jahre ins Gefängnis brachte. Heute ist Don als Mensch wie als Funker nach wie vor um seine Rehabilitation bemüht.

Die offiziellen QSL-Karten der Expeditionen enthalten den Hinweis: "Sponsored by the World Radio Study Association". QSL-Manager war E. C. Atkerson "Ack" W4ECI, Inhaber der Firma Ack Radio Cupply Com. in Birmingham, Alabama.
Gefördert - und der Vollständigkeit halber hier ebenfalls angeführt - wurden auch einige Aktivitäten ohne Beteiligung von Don Miller. Zudem betreute die "World Radio Propagation Study Association" von Juli 1963 bis Februar 1964 auch die Expeditionen von Gus Browning's (W4BPD) von Bhutan (AC8PN) bis China (XW8AW/BY). Don wurde wiederholt einer unethischen QSL-Politik bezichtigt. Der Verdacht lautete, dass man QSLs auch ohne Kontakt kaufen könne. Dem widersprach Don: Es gebe zwei Arten von Bestätigungen, die "Sponsor cards" direkt und die regulären QSLs via Ack, dem QSL Manager.
Ted Thorpe und Chuck Swain
Auf dem Meer verschollen...
Am Morgen des 28. Januar 1966 gingen Edmund "Ted" M. Thorpe, ZL2AWJ, und Charles "Chuck" N. Swain, K7LMU (K4GTZ, F7DD, 5A1FF...), nach den erfolgreichen DXpeditionen nach Niue und Wallis an Bord ihrer Ketch "Marinero". Charles war zuvor in Indonesien, Burma, Thailand, Spratly, Ebon und Cormoran gewesen und traf sich nun mit Ted. Die beiden blieben auf dem Meer verschollen. Man hat nie eine Spur von ihnen entdeckt.

Herb hat Don Miller bei zwei DXpeditionen begleitet, die beide für heftige Kontroversen sorgten. Don musste später einräumen, dass die angebliche Aktivierung von St. Peter & St. Paul Rocks getürkt war; er blieb jedoch bei seiner Behauptung, die Aktivierung von Navassa sei legitim gewesen. Warum Herb bei diesem Schwindel mitmachte, warum er Dons Standpunkt im Navassa-Konflikt teilt und wie sehr er seine Jugendtorheit seitdem bereut hat, erfahren wir hier.
Die K7LMU-TI9C Cormoran Reef-Story
According to Jim Cain’s Yasme book, in mid-1965 Chuck Swain – K7LMU and Don Miller claimed to discover a map that showed Cormoran Reef as being under the jurisdiction of Costa Rica (and Ebon Atoll of Ecuador). On the basis of this information, the Consuls of the two countries in Los Angeles issued authorisation for operations using the callsigns K7LMU/HC8E and K7LMU/TI9C.
ARRL’s Awards Committee duly accepted both as potential new DXCC entities and announced that QSLs would be accepted from March 1966, in parallel with these happenings. Lloyd and Iris Colvin were also on the scene. They apparently received similar Ecuadorian related authorisation for operation from Ebon and a race was on to be the first to put it on the air.
K7LMU/HC8E appeared on the bands during October 1965 closely followed by K7LMU/TI9C in November 1965. The Colvins arrive on Ebon in November and by then the Ecuador connection was being questioned. They operated under the permit issued by the Trust Territory as KX6SZ. While there they obtained fairly firm evidence that their operation was the first from the atoll. And that no-one had been there during the previous month.
The issues surrounding these two spots rumbled on throughout 1966. It was eventually determined that neither Ecuador nor Costa Rica had never had any territorial claim and, taking the most charitable interpretation, it came down to a misunderstanding by the Consulates in Los Angeles.
Although the entities had been placed on the Countries List, QSLs were not accepted for credit and the two were eventually removed in December 1966, ending a very controversial episode in DXCC history and paving the way for a revision of the qualification criteria.

November 2019: Don Miller in Thailand
The Office of the National Broadcasting Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and the Radio Amateur Society of Thailand under the Patronage of His Majesty the King (RAST) were jointly hosting a conference entitled "NBTC International Alliance of Volunteers 2019" on November 16, 2019 in the Auditorium Building of the NBTC at the Secretariat's office on Phaholyothin Soi 8, Bangkok. The day-long conference also honoured the recent coronation of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun, King Rama X, and featured guests and speakers from Thailand and from some of the 11 countries that share a bilateral amateur radio agreement with the Kingdom of Thailand along with a representative from the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU). The conference was attended by representatives of all the 11 countries with reciprocal agreements -- the USA, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria, the United Kingdom, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, France, Denmark and Finland -- while there were also representatives from several Asian countries attending the conference, including Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The objective of the conference was to improve communications when faced with a crisis or a disaster as well as to test the signals of amateur radio satellites and to perform other activities to create a bond between amateur radio operators for the long-term.
