Aldabra, etwa 360 km nördlich von Madagaskar gelegen. ist das größte Atoll des Indischen Ozeans. Es gehört politisch zu den Seychellen und ist Teil der Aldabra-Gruppe, die zu den Outer Islands gehört. Es steht unter strengem Schutz und hat deshalb seine ursprüngliche Flora und Fauna weitgehend bewahren können.
Aldabra besteht aus den vier Hauptinseln Picard (West Island, 9,4 km²), Polymnie (Polymnieli, 4,75 km²), Malabar (Middle Island, 26,8 km²) und Grand Terre (South Island, 116,1 km²) und erstreckt sich über eine Länge von 34 km und eine Breite von 14,5 km mit einer Landfläche von 155,4 km². Die Fläche der Lagune misst 224 km², sie ist somit die weltzweitgrößte Lagune. Die innere Lagune füllt und entleert sich täglich zwei Mal. Aldabra erhebt sich nur geringfügig, maximal acht Meter, über den Meeresspiegel.
Während die vier größten Inseln den äußeren Ring des Atolls (zusammen mit einigen kleinen Inseln zwischen South und Polymnie) markieren, gibt es mehrere kleine und kleinste Inseln in der Lagune. Dazu gehören Île Michel (Coconut Island) im Osten mit 0,34 km² und Île Esprit (Euphrates Island) im Westen mit 0,41 km². Die Verfassung der Seychellen listet insgesamt 46 Inseln für das Aldabra-Atoll auf. Aldabra ist bis auf wenige Menschen, die zum Schutze des Atolls dort leben, unbewohnt.
Die Aldabra-Gruppe besteht aus dem Aldabra-Atoll und Assumption, der einzigen Insel mit Flugpiste (IOTA AF-025) und dem Cosmoledo-Atoll (IOTA AF-026) mit Cosmoledo, Astove, Menai und Wizard. Sie ist von den Hauptinseln der Seychellen, Mahé und Praslin (den so genannten Inner Islands) mehr als 1000 km entfernt. Die gesamte Landfläche der Gruppe beträgt 175,91 km². Ausgedehnt ist die Gruppe jedoch auf mehrere tausend Quadratkilometer. Keine der Inseln ist regulär bewohnt, es gibt aber mehrere Stationen zur Erforschung und zum Schutz des Atolls.

DXCC HAPPENINGS. Another "Application For New DXCC Country" status was sent to the DXAC. Actually this application was a request to reinstate Aldabra Atoll to the DXCC Countries List. The application was filed by Kurt Bindschedler, HB9MX/S79MX, who was active from Aldabra November 1st and 2nd in 1993. Kurt believes Aldabra qualifies under the DXCC Criteria rule, "Point 1: by virtue of Governmnet." Aldabra was deleted from the DXCC List, June 28, 1976. All contacts now made June 29, 1976 and after with Aldabra counts towards Seychelles (S7). Kurt states, "the Seychelles government is the administrative authority for all outlying islands with the exception of Aldabra. Aldabra is administered by non-governmental, non-profit scientific and conservation organization SIF (Seychelles Island Foundation). SIF consists of a board of trustees,
the execxutive officer and several foreign well reputed personalities as members, with offices on Mahe and in London."
